What is Volkswagen doing with Amarok and Transporter? Ready for military use after changes
Volkswagen is contemplating new production directions for its Amarok and Transporter models, aiming to adapt them for military use amid operational challenges at its German factories.
Volkswagen's factories in Germany are currently operating at reduced capacity, leading to questions about their future. The Osnabrück plant will cease production of the T-Roc Cabriolet in 2027, and plans are in place to either sell or repurpose the factory to align with changing market demands. Recently, at the Enforce Tac defense and security trade fair, military-modified versions of Volkswagen vehicles were showcased, hinting at potential new production lines focusing on defense needs.
According to Volkswagen representatives, these military vehicles have been specifically developed at the Osnabrück location. However, it remains to be seen if there is a viable market for these new products, as the decision regarding the production of these vehicles is still pending. The vehicles presented at the Nürnberg trade fair included the MV.1 based on the Amarok pickup and the MV.2 based on the Crafter van, all adorned in military green, signaling Volkswagen's interest in tapping into the defense sector.
As the automotive market faces challenges, particularly in the context of military procurement, Volkswagen’s strategic pivot reflects broader trends within the industry. The potential for manufacturing military-grade vehicles indicates a diversification of their product offerings, aimed at maintaining operational viability and responding to emerging market opportunities in the defense sector.
