Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles marked the 70th anniversary of its Hanover plant on March 8, a significant milestone highlighting the history of one of the company’s key production sites. The factory commenced operations on the same date in 1956, marking the start of production for the classic T1 Transporter, which has become an iconic vehicle over the decades. Currently, the Hanover facility is recognized as Volkswagen’s main production unit, and by 2026, it is expected to be among the most modern automotive factories in Europe.

In their press release, Volkswagen emphasized their commitment to a sustainable transformation of the Hanover plant, aiming for carbon-neutral production by 2040. This aligns with a broader industry trend toward sustainability and indicates a strategic shift in manufacturing practices within automotive sectors. At present, the pre-series production of the fully autonomous ID. Buzz is underway at the Hanover facility, marking a significant technological advancement for Volkswagen. This initiative represents the industrial realization phase for this innovative vehicle. Additionally, the factory will be producing a roboshuttle equipped with Mobileye technology at large scale for the first time in Europe, reinforcing Volkswagen’s commitment to leading in tech integration within the automotive industry.
