Decades of tree logging and 90-degree cuts to mountains... Environmental groups oppose the 20.6 billion won park project

Environmental groups in Jeonbuk are demanding a halt and reevaluation of a park project in Wansan Chilbong, claiming it severely damages urban ecological corridors.

In Jeonbuk, the Environmental Movement Federation has issued a statement condemning the Jeonju city's ongoing Wansan Chilbong Hanbitmaru Park project, arguing that decades-old trees are being logged indiscriminately, and the mountainsides are being cut at nearly a 90-degree angle, leading to severe ecological damage. The group insists that the construction, disguised under the pretext of promoting healing and tourism, is irreparably destroying the forest, which is considered a future asset for the citizens.

The park project, initiated by Jeonju in 2024, aims to create a space for relaxation and healing tourism, integrating key attractions such as Jeonju Hanok Village and the Wansan Bunker. With an estimated cost of 20.6 billion won, the project includes plans for viewpoints, artificial waterfalls, gardens, and skywalks and is set to be completed this year. However, the Environmental Federation argues that the current implementation is inconsistent with the higher-level urban planning principles that emphasize ecological preservation and connectivity.

They pointed to the expansion of a road connecting the Wansan Bunker and healing center as a prime example of misguided infrastructure projects. Despite existing public parking and facilities, the city's decision to allocate 1.7 billion won to widen the road reflects an unjustifiable approach to construction, which could block wildlife movement and create an oppressive landscape for visitors. The Federation also criticized the artificial structures proposed, asserting that such developments undermine the natural character of the area, which has long served as a simple space for recreation and connection with nature.
