"Let's Become Trees Together" Citizens March for Tree Protection in Jeonju

Citizens and civic groups in Jeonju, South Korea, are organizing a large demonstration to protest against the city's tree management policies following the controversial logging of willow trees along the Jeonju Stream.

In Jeonju, South Korea, civic groups and residents are rallying to protest the local government's controversial logging practices. They are particularly focused on the removal of willow trees around the Jeonju Stream, which they claim not only diminishes the local environment but also eradicates memories and life forms associated with these trees. On February 29, previous years saw the sudden cutting down of a significant willow tree, sparking outrage among local citizens. Despite this, the city continued reckless logging activities in local parks, drawing further criticism for its tree management policies.

The group organizing the march, called the "228 Citizens' March for Tree Protection," held a press conference on the 26th to demand accountability from local officials. They cited a recent survey conducted by the Jeonbuk Environmental Movement Association, revealing that a staggering 96.9% of Jeonju residents oppose the logging of the willows. However, they argue that the city has not issued a proper apology nor halted the logging practices that contradict established environmental conservation laws, suggesting a lack of communication and responsibility in municipal governance.

Scheduled for the 28th, the planned march will begin at Namcheon Bridge and wind through the traditional Hanok Village, returning to the starting point. The demonstrators expressed that this march is both a tribute to the fallen trees and a commitment to preserving every living thing in light of the climate crisis. They are calling on other citizens to join this significant movement aimed at advocating for better environmental stewardship.
