In a case of information technology fraud, among those arrested are also state officials
Latvian police arrested 21 people, including state officials, in connection with a €1.5 million information technology procurement fraud investigation led by the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
Latvian authorities, specifically the State Police, have carried out a significant operation resulting in the arrest of 21 individuals tied to an information technology procurement fraud case valued at €1.5 million. This operation is part of an investigation initiated by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO). The arrested individuals include not only ordinary suspects but also state officials, highlighting the widespread nature of the alleged corruption within governmental procurement processes for IT systems.
In addition to the arrests, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is investigating a separate case concerning the unauthorized disclosure of confidential information involving high-ranking officials, such as Edvīns Balševics, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development. This investigative effort aims to address both the procurement fraud and the potential mishandling of sensitive information by public officials, signaling a coordinated attempt by Latvian authorities to tackle corruption at multiple levels.
The operational success of the police signals a larger crackdown on organized crime within state procurement processes. The move reflects a growing commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability in government dealings, particularly in the procurement of digital services and technologies, which have come under scrutiny in recent years. As investigations continue, there may be significant implications not only for those directly involved but also for public trust in government institutions.
