Officials are suffocated by fuel prices: demand urgent increase in compensations
Lithuanian officials are urging an immediate hike in travel compensation rates due to soaring fuel prices exacerbated by the recent Middle East conflict.
Since the outbreak of war in the Middle East, fuel prices have rapidly escalated, significantly affecting a large portion of Lithuanian officials who commute long distances to their workplaces. This situation has raised concerns that the cost of serving the state has become financially unviable for many, with the current salaries of ordinary officials already being disturbingly low. Kęstutis Pauliukas, the chairman of the LRITĮPS union, has pointed out that commuting costs are rapidly consuming their meager paychecks.
The professional union is calling for an immediate increase in travel expense compensation from the current rate of 0.08 euros per kilometer to 0.15 euros. This demand highlights how even seemingly minor issues regarding compensation can escalate into critical problems for Lithuania's entire penal and law enforcement systems, especially given the existing staff shortages in both police and prison sectors.
Pauliukas has emphasized that such financial strains can deter potential personnel from joining the force during a time when the diminishing number of officials is already alarming. The ongoing crisis and resulting rise in operational costs look set to further challenge the resilience and functionality of law enforcement agencies in Lithuania, raising questions about national security and public safety amidst rising costs.
