Feeding bears near residential buildings poses significant safety risks, leading to potential bear culling.
Recent reports from the Eastern Finland Police and the Finnish Wildlife Agency indicate that intentional feeding of bears in residential areas increases safety risks for locals and may result in the necessity to cull bears habituated to human presence. Harri-Pekka Pohjolainen from the Eastern Finland Police highlights the growing concern, noting that last year, nine bears were euthanized under safety mandates due to their proximity to human habitats. Most of these incidents were linked to available food sources that attracted the bears.
