KNAB will become the contact point for whistleblower systems

Latvian lawmakers have approved amendments to the Whistleblowing Law, designating the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) as the official contact point for whistleblowers in the country.

In a recent legislative move, Saeima deputies in Latvia approved amendments to the Whistleblowing Law in its third reading, which will officially designate the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) as the main contact point for whistleblowers. Previously, these responsibilities were managed by the State Chancellery, but the new amendments reflect a shift in the oversight structure for handling whistleblowing issues in the country.

The amendments not only appoint KNAB as the central authority but also require it to provide training for contact persons and responsible entities involved in whistleblowing. Furthermore, KNAB is tasked with reviewing whistleblower reports that do not fall clearly under the jurisdiction of any other competent institution. This restructuring is seen as a significant step in ensuring that whistleblowers have a reliable system for reporting concerns, particularly regarding public officials' potential conflicts of interest.

KNAB has expressed readiness to take on these new responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining continuous operation of the whistleblower system. As the second-largest competent authority receiving whistleblower reports since the law's inception, KNAB has highlighted the need for a dedicated framework to better address the concerns raised, thus potentially enhancing the effectiveness and credibility of whistleblowing in Latvia.
