New price for Stad ship tunnel: 8.6 billion kroner

The estimated cost for the Stad ship tunnel has risen significantly, exceeding the limits set by the Norwegian Parliament.

The Stad ship tunnel project has seen its estimated costs rise to 8.6 billion kroner, significantly higher than the 5.4 billion kroner limit established by the Norwegian Parliament. Fisheries and Maritime Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss highlighted that this increase indicates the project cannot be completed within the previously approved budget.

As a result of these rising costs, the Norwegian government has halted the Stad ship tunnel's progress as part of the 2026 budget proposal. The government argues that the project's benefits do not justify its high expenses, and they are currently reviewing whether to continue funding it. Furthermore, a majority in Parliament has urged the government to ensure that the Coastal Administration conducts negotiations to finalize the project's price and to identify measures that could reduce costs.

The Coastal Administration has now completed this process, and the government is expected to analyze their report before bringing further proposals to Parliament. This situation underscores the challenges faced in large infrastructure projects, particularly regarding budget management and the assessment of value versus cost.
