Fire in Klaipėda apartment building: ceiling heated to 140 degrees, dead woman found
A tragic fire in a Klaipėda apartment resulted in the death of a 84-year-old woman, with the ceiling heating up to 140 degrees Celsius before firefighters arrived.
On March 17, a fire broke out in an apartment building in Klaipėda, Lithuania, leading to the tragic discovery of a deceased 84-year-old woman. Local authorities reported that firefighters were called to the scene around 23:24 after a resident alerted them to dangerously heated ceilings in her apartment on the third floor of the five-story building. Upon arrival, firefighters detected no smoke in the stairwell or the reporting tenant's unit, which complicated their initial assessment of the situation.
Utilizing thermal imaging technology, firefighters found that the ceiling temperatures had soared between 100 to 140 degrees Celsius. Further inspection of the fourth-floor apartment revealed the woman unresponsive in the corridor area, with a burning bed in the room. The fire severely damaged the room, burning the bed, scorching household items, and causing flooring destruction, resulting in a smoke-filled two-bedroom apartment. Notably, smoke detectors were present; however, they did not activate during the fire.
An investigation into the incident has been launched, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the fire and the failure of the smoke detectors. This tragic event raises concerns about fire safety measures and the effectiveness of alarms in residences, highlighting the importance of ensuring that such devices function properly to prevent future tragedies like this one.
