A massive NATO exercise is underway in Lapland - with a descriptive nickname from soldiers
The Cold Response 2026 NATO exercise in Lapland involves 7,500 troops, including 4,000 from NATO allied countries, aimed at strengthening defense in Greenland and the Arctic region.
The Cold Response 2026 NATO exercise is currently taking place in Lapland, Finland, engaging a total of 7,500 military personnel, with approximately 4,000 units coming from NATO allied nations. This significant exercise is part of NATO's Arctic Sentry operations, focusing on bolstering security in Greenland and the Arctic area, an increasingly critical region amid current geopolitical tensions.
In particular, the exercise features a strong contingent of Swedish forces, with around 3,500 soldiers participating in Rovajärvi as part of the multinational operation. The exercise reflects a new level of cooperation within NATO, particularly as Finland has recently joined the alliance. The upcoming FLF cooperation set to begin in the summer will see Sweden coordinating NATO operations within Finland through a newly positioned headquarters in Rovaniemi.
The ongoing military exercises are being conducted in the context of heightened global tensions that have affected Finland’s defense strategy, especially after NATO membership. During a media day at Rovajärvi, Finnish Army Commander Lieutenant General Pasi Välimäki expressed his condolences for a French colleague, Sergeant Arnaud Frion, who recently lost his life in Iraq, highlighting the somber realities of military operations even during collaborative training exercises like Cold Response 2026.
