Hormuz, the blockade could sink us

Alvise Biffi emphasizes the urgency of stabilizing the Strait of Hormuz to prevent unsustainable energy costs for Italian industries by September.

During the conference "Geopolitics and Rare Earths" held in Assolombarda, Alvise Biffi, president of the organization, warned about the critical situation resulting from instability in the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that if stability is not achieved within a few weeks, the energy costs could become untenable for many Italian industries by September. The situation poses a significant threat to the manufacturing sector, particularly impacting small and medium-sized enterprises that struggle with rising energy prices.

Biffi proposed immediate actions to combat this emergency, including leveraging provisions from Italy's recent Energy decree. He suggested the implementation of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) as a viable solution, which would allow companies to secure stable energy prices directly from renewable producers, irrespective of international market fluctuations. Such contracts would be particularly beneficial for smaller firms, which typically lack negotiating power in energy markets.

He further elaborated that organizations like Sace could play a crucial role in ensuring these agreements are formed. The narrative underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to safeguard Italy's industrial fabric, which is essential for its economic resilience, particularly given the dependence on affordable energy.
