Integration of Incheon International Airport, Korea Airports Corporation, and Gadeokdo Airport Construction Corporation: Korea Airports Corporation Union Supports It
The Korea Airports Corporation union has expressed support for the proposed integration of Incheon International Airport Corporation, Korea Airports Corporation, and Gadeokdo Airport Construction Corporation due to concerns about regional disparities in airport investment.
The government is considering the integration of Incheon International Airport Corporation, Korea Airports Corporation, and Gadeokdo Airport Construction Corporation to address imbalances in airport investment across the country. The union of Korea Airports Corporation, which operates all airports except Incheon, has voiced its support for this integration. They argue that current airport operation policies need to shift towards ensuring balanced national development and enhancing public service amid the threat of regional extinction, where local airports face increasing structural problems due to the concentration of resources and growth at Incheon International Airport.
The union emphasized that the existing government policy favors Incheon International Airport, which is rapidly growing, while neglecting other national airports, leading to alarming issues such as the deterioration of local airports and diminished investment in facilities and personnel. The union is urging a national policy shift that focuses on balanced development among regional airports, improvement of international flight routes to promote local tourism, and strengthening global competitiveness by eliminating overlapping functions and unnecessary competition among airports.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance and Economy has recently gathered expert opinions regarding public institution mergers, and the recommendation to integrate the airport corporations has sparked opposition primarily from unions and local political groups associated with Incheon International Airport. They argue that such an integration could threaten the operational integrity and future growth of Incheon, potentially exacerbating the very disparities the integration aims to resolve.
