[Exclusive] '100 million won nomination donation suspicion' Kang Seon-woo and Kim Kyung summoned today... possibility of confrontation investigation
Prosecutors are set to summon independent lawmaker Kang Seon-woo for questioning regarding allegations of receiving a bribe of 100 million won from former Seoul city councilor Kim Kyung, ahead of the 2022 local elections.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office will conduct a second round of questioning of independent lawmaker Kang Seon-woo on the morning of the 18th, as he is embroiled in a scandal involving a bribe of 100 million won given by former Seoul city councilor Kim Kyung purportedly in exchange for political favors leading up to the 2022 local elections. This questioning follows the earlier transfer of Kang to the prosecutors' office after his arrest on the 11th, and he was previously interrogated on the 16th. Additionally, Kim is scheduled to be summoned for questioning later the same day, raising the possibility that the two may confront each other during their interrogations to clarify the details regarding the alleged monetary exchange and the political solicitation that occurred.
Kang faces serious charges including violations of the Anti-Corruption Act, Political Funds Act, and allegations of receiving illegal benefits. The suspicions emerged when it was revealed that in January 2022, during a meeting at the Hyatt Hotel in Yongsan, Kang reportedly accepted 100 million won from Kim in return for facilitating a nomination. At that time, Kang was part of the nomination management committee for the Democratic Party, and Kim eventually became the partyβs candidate for the Gangseo district, a stronghold of Kang's, in June's local elections and successfully won the seat. The case gained significant attention after portions of a recorded conversation between Kang and Kim Byeong-gi, a member of the Democratic Party's nomination committee, were made public in December 2022, which implicated them in the unfolding scandal and cast a shadow over the integrity of the party's nomination process.
