Suspicion of 100 million won in political donations: Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo faces first prosecution investigation after being remanded
Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo is being investigated by prosecutors for allegedly receiving a political donation of 100 million won from former Seoul council member Kim Kyung ahead of the 2022 local elections.
Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo has been summoned for questioning by prosecutors over allegations that he received 100 million won as a political donation from former Seoul city council member Kim Kyung in the lead-up to the 2022 local elections. This probe is significant as it marks Kang’s first interrogation by the prosecution after being remanded on November 11. The investigation is being conducted by the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office's Public Investigation Division, with both Kang and Kim having appeared together for the inquiry.
The allegations suggest that Kang, who was then a candidate for the Democratic Party's Seoul city council, accepted this sum from Kim during a meeting at the Hyatt Hotel in Yongsan, Seoul, in January 2022. Following the meeting, Kim was later nominated and successfully elected as the Democratic Party candidate for Kang's district in Gangseo-gu during the June local elections. The court authorized the issuance of arrest warrants for both Kang and Kim on December 3 due to concerns about potential destruction of evidence, highlighting the seriousness of the charges.
This investigation could have far-reaching implications for Korean politics, especially concerning transparency in campaign financing and the ethical conduct of politicians. If found guilty, this case may weaken public trust in the political system and the Democratic Party, raising questions about the integrity of the electoral process as the nation prepares for future elections.
