Minister of Justice says that Federal Police has opened an inquiry to investigate abusive fuel prices
Brazil's Minister of Justice announced an inquiry by the Federal Police to investigate soaring fuel prices, citing unacceptable reasons for price increases linked to the war.
Brazil's Minister of Justice and Public Security, Wellington CΓ©sar Lima e Silva, announced that the Federal Police has initiated an inquiry to investigate abusive fuel prices. This action comes amid rising concerns over fuel costs being unjustifiably inflated, with the Minister criticizing the use of the war's impact as a pretext for these price hikes. The Federal Police's inquiry reflects a government effort to hold accountable those responsible for exorbitant fuel pricing amidst a national cost-of-living crisis.
In addition to the inquiry, the National Consumer Secretariat has mobilized consumer protection agencies across all states to enhance oversight of fuel pricing and consumer rights. The Minister emphasized the need for collaboration among various government bodies, including the Ministry of Mines and Energy and state public ministries, to ensure rigorous scrutiny and enforcement against price exploitation. This initiative aims to safeguard consumers from dishonestly high fuel prices that may be justified under misleading pretexts.
The National Petroleum Agency (ANP) has also launched a major inspection operation across nine states and the Federal District to identify and address any instances of abusive pricing, as well as to assess the quality and quantity of fuel provided at pumps. This comprehensive effort underscores the Brazilian government's commitment to transparency and accountability in the fuel sector, reaffirming that consumers deserve fair pricing and quality fuels without exploitative practices.
