VLI wants to get rid of the tourist train between Tiradentes and São João del-Rei
VLI, a logistics company, intends to cease operations of the historic tourist train connecting the Brazilian cities of Tiradentes and São João del-Rei.
VLI, a Brazilian logistics company, has announced its intention to withdraw from the operation of the historic tourist train that connects the cities of Tiradentes and São João del-Rei in the state of Minas Gerais. This steam locomotive is recognized as the oldest tourist train still in operation in Brazil, and it operates on a railway line that was inaugurated by Dom Pedro II in 1881, shortly before the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, making it an essential part of Brazil's railway heritage.
According to VLI, discussions are already underway to transfer the management of the tourist operation to another operator with a focus solely on tourism. One potential new operator that has emerged in discussions is related to railway preservation entities, including the Brazilian Association of Railway Preservation (ABPF), which could be responsible for managing the railway and ensuring its continued operation as a cultural and historical resource. VLI has stated that any new operator will be an association without profit motives, complying with the recommendations of relevant regulatory bodies.
The transfer of operations is crucial not just for maintaining this iconic railway line but also for preserving a piece of cultural heritage that plays a significant role in attracting tourism to the region. As conversations progress regarding the future management of the train service, the involvement of organizations focused on heritage preservation might help secure the train's legacy while continuing to promote tourism in these historically rich cities.
