Dourados Indigenous Reserve confirms 4th death from chikungunya

The Dourados City Hall confirmed the fourth death from chikungunya in the Indigenous Reserve, highlighting an epidemic situation due to the rapid increase in cases.

The Dourados City Hall announced the troubling news of the fourth chikungunya death reported in the Indigenous Reserve, as per the latest health surveillance bulletin released on February 16. The reserve is experiencing an epidemic due to a swift rise in reported cases, prompting local health authorities to act urgently. Reports indicate a total of 407 cases have been documented, including 202 confirmed instances, 181 under investigation, and four fatalities, which have raised significant alarm among both residents and health officials.

In response to this health crisis, teams from the Municipal Health Department are conducting mass efforts in the Jaguapiru and Bororó villages, with the support of professionals from Itaporã and the State Government. The National Force of the Unified Health System (SUS) is also scheduled to arrive on Thursday to bolster the combat against the outbreak. Public health leaders are focusing on educating the community about prevention and control measures to mitigate the rapid transmission of this mosquito-borne virus.

The ongoing situation has not only affected the Indigenous community but also the urban population in Dourados, with a reported increase in chikungunya cases amounting to 912 notifications in 2026. This broader impact underlines the necessity for a coordinated response as health officials strive to contain the spread of the virus and prevent further loss of life. The challenge remains significant as local and state authorities mobilize resources to address a growing public health concern in the region.
