First death from chikungunya in Brazil in 2026 is recorded in MT

Mato Grosso confirmed the first death from chikungunya in Brazil in 2026, marking a significant health concern as the state investigates other potential cases.

Mato Grosso, Brazil, has reported its first death from chikungunya in 2026, which occurred in the municipality of Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, situated 552 km from Cuiabá, according to the official Ministry of Health data released on Thursday. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, but it has been confirmed that the individual succumbed to complications associated with the illness. In addition to this case, there is a second suspected death under investigation in Sinop, approximately 503 km from Cuiabá, raising concerns about the spread of the disease in the region.

Despite this tragic development, the number of chikungunya cases reported in Mato Grosso so far this year is significantly lower than the figures from the same period in 2025. From January 1 to January 19, the state has recorded 321 cases of chikungunya, contrasting sharply with the previous year where over 17,000 probable cases and 26 confirmed deaths were reported within the same timeframe. This reduction in case numbers may indicate improved public health responses or a potential decrease in transmission rates as the health department continues to monitor the situation closely.

As health officials continue to assess and respond to the chikungunya outbreak, they are also monitoring other mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, which presents its own challenges. The situation highlights the ongoing public health concerns regarding vector-borne diseases in Brazil, underscoring the need for effective prevention and treatment strategies to protect the population from these infectious diseases.
