Frauds at INSS: Association Linked to Deputy Sued by Elderly Woman Who Became President Without Knowing
The Federal Police in Brazil initiated an operation against federal deputy Maria Gorete Pereira after uncovering illegal deductions by the National Association of Retirees and Pensioners (Aapen), whose president, Francisca da Silva de Souza, was deceived into her role.
On Tuesday, the Federal Police launched a significant operation against federal deputy Maria Gorete Pereira, as it was revealed that the National Association of Retirees and Pensioners (Aapen) was involved in illegal deductions from its members' pensions. The Aapen, headquartered in Fortaleza, Ceará, had been facing legal challenges, including a case filed by its own president, Francisca da Silva de Souza. At 72 years old, living in a Fortaleza suburb, and largely uneducated, Francisca claimed she was misled into taking on the presidency of Aapen without her awareness, representing a troubling case of exploitation within senior communities.
The Aapen, which allegedly served close to 492,000 affiliates as of last May, was reportedly deducting membership fees directly from pension payments, accumulating millions in revenues each month. The case reflects not just the personal plight of Francisca, but also larger systemic issues of how pensioners are sometimes exploited by organizations that are meant to protect their interests. The operation, authorized by Supreme Court Minister André Mendonça, highlights the ongoing concerns regarding accountability and transparency within pension-related institutions in Brazil.
This situation raises pressing questions about the oversight of organizations that manage pension funds and support the elderly. The involvement of a federal deputy in this case underscores potential political implications and the need for reforms in how retirement associations operate. A call for stricter regulations may emerge as authorities investigate the true extent of the alleged fraud and the role of elected officials in such schemes, which threatens the livelihood of vulnerable populations such as the elderly.
