Cheap apartments for 4 million families. The government announces a new housing strategy

The Polish government has unveiled a social housing program aimed at providing affordable rentals for 4 million families.

The Polish government has announced a new housing strategy that proposes a rental rate of 1500 zł for a 50m² apartment in Warsaw as part of its social housing program. This year, the government plans to contract the construction and renovation of 18,000 affordable apartments and 2,500 dormitory places, aiming to fill the housing gap for families and young singles who earn too much to qualify for state aid yet are too poor for private rental markets.

According to Deputy Minister of Development and Technology Tomasz Lewandowski, the initiative is designed to cater to the real needs of Polish citizens, ensuring that families are not cooped up in studio apartments. The government is determined to provide real options for those who either cannot or do not wish to take on a 30-year mortgage, offering them a stable rental choice in decent apartments at affordable rents. This is particularly crucial given the rising housing costs and the increasing number of people in need of assistance.

The strategy not only emphasizes making affordable housing available to the targeted demographic but also encourages cooperative housing initiatives. By involving cooperatives in the rental market, the government hopes to diversify the options available and make housing accessible to a broader section of society, addressing the challenges that many families face in the current economic climate.
