Trafficking in Lapa invades properties, charges merchants 'fees', and even tortures drug addicts
An investigation has revealed that the Comando Vermelho gang is extorting merchants and torturing drug users in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro as part of their drug trafficking operations.
Investigations leading to the Operation Colmeia, initiated by security forces in Rio de Janeiro, have unveiled severe criminal activities carried out by the Comando Vermelho (CV) gang in the Lapa district. The investigation indicates that the gang has not only been involved in drug trafficking but also in extorting local merchants and torturing drug addicts who frequented the area. As of the latest updates, 14 individuals have been arrested in connection with these crimes.
A video obtained by the Civil Police, reportedly recorded by the traffickers themselves, has raised alarming concerns as it depicts drug users being bound and subjected to violence. Uriel AlcΓ’ntara Machado, a delegate from Polinter, described a disturbing scene where individuals were tortured, and decisions about their fate were cruelly made by the traffickers. The case originated from the 5th Police Station (Mem de SΓ‘), where police discovered various ways the CV exploited the Lapa neighborhood for their operations.
The implications of this operation are significant as they highlight the extent of the criminal control exerted by the Comando Vermelho in urban areas. The combination of drug trafficking, extortion, and violent control over vulnerable populations, such as drug addicts, reflects broader issues of social and economic distress. This situation requires ongoing attention from authorities to address not only law enforcement but also the underlying social problems contributing to such criminal behaviors.
