Strong winds leave thousands in the dark in Central Canada, Maritimes
Strong winds have caused widespread power outages across Central Canada and the Maritimes, affecting nearly 310,000 customers in Quebec alone.
Severe winds in Central Canada and the Maritimes have disrupted electricity services, with Quebec facing the brunt of the outages. Early in the morning, nearly 310,000 customers lost power, particularly in the Laurentians, Lanaudière, and Montérégie regions, where wind speeds reached up to 90 kilometers an hour. In response, Hydro-Québec has mobilized around 1,100 workers to restore power in affected areas.
Further compounding the situation, the winds also impacted Ontario, where approximately 30,000 residents lost power in the eastern parts of the province, alongside 11,000 in Ottawa. The outages in the Maritimes were also significant, indicating that the storm has been widespread across the region. As weather forecasts continue to predict high winds, the situation warrants close monitoring.
This event highlights the vulnerabilities of electrical grids in the face of severe weather conditions, emphasizing the need for robust infrastructure and emergency response measures. Communities affected by the outages are now facing challenges not only due to the lack of electricity but also in terms of recovery and restoration efforts, as workers are deployed to reconnect the disrupted services.
