Children at Iittala daycare ate raw chicken – service provider fined 2,000 euros

A daycare in Hämeenlinna, Finland, was fined 2,000 euros after serving partially raw chicken to around 60 children and adults.

In Iittala, Hämeenlinna, a daycare faced a fine of 2,000 euros for serving a dish containing partially raw chicken to approximately 60 children and adults. The incident is being taken seriously by local education authorities, with Erja Hirvonen, the city's early childhood education director, emphasizing that such an event has not occurred before in Hämeenlinna's schools or daycares.

The raw chicken was only discovered after some children and staff had already consumed the dish made of chicken and noodles. Upon realizing the mistake, the food service provider, Compass Group, contacted the city immediately. They initiated a follow-up response to handle the aftermath of the incident promptly, acknowledging the seriousness of the error. However, despite their efforts in addressing the situation quickly, they still faced financial penalties.

According to Maarit Virkkala, the business director of Compass Group, the company is accepting the imposed sanction as part of their responsibility in case of a contractual breach. This incident raises significant concerns regarding food safety practices within childcare facilities, and it highlights the need for stringent monitoring to prevent such occurrences in the future.
