CEO of Sabesp says Copasa's size sparks interest
The CEO of Sabesp, Carlos Piani, expressed interest in participating in the privatization of Copasa due to its significant size and relevance in the sanitation sector.
Carlos Piani, the CEO of Sabesp, announced the company's interest in the privatization of the state-run water and sewage company Copasa during a results presentation conference. He emphasized that Copasa’s large scale and its importance within the sanitation sector make it an attractive opportunity for Sabesp. Piani noted that the company prefers larger deals, as small ones, even with high returns, might not be meaningful for their shareholders. Hence, the size of the business is a critical factor for Sabesp's considerations.
The decision to participate in the Copasa privatization will hinge on two main pillars according to Piani. The first is how the regulatory framework will be structured, which will include an assessment of the pricing strategies involved. The second pillar is focused on the processes such as bidding and how the bookbuilding will unfold. These factors are crucial since they will determine the financial viability and strategic alignment of the decision to invest in a privatized Copasa.
Currently, the privatization process of Copasa is nearing the finalization of its regulatory rules. The assembly of Minas Gerais approved the legislative project in December 2025, which enables the company's privatization. This step marks a significant move in the region’s approach to public services, potentially influencing the dynamics within the sanitation market in Brazil as private entities may be increasingly involved in sectors previously dominated by state-owned enterprises.
