Inmate who escaped using bedsheet rope is captured in MA; the other two are still at large

An inmate who escaped from a prison in Maranhão using a makeshift rope made from bedsheets has been recaptured, while two other escapees remain on the run.

Marcos Vinicius Barros de Carvalho was apprehended on Monday, October 16, in the neighborhood of Invasão, João Lisboa, following an escape from the Unidade Prisional de Ressocialização de Imperatriz a month prior. He, along with two other inmates, used improvised ropes made from bedsheets to scale down from a deactivated watchtower to flee the facility. The police response led by subtenente Corrêa, who was off-duty at the time, was swift, resulting in the recapture of Carvalho but leaving the other two fugitives, Bruno Passos Nascimento and Marcos Gomes da Silva, still at large.

The escape illustrates the security challenges faced by the prison system in Maranhão, where overcrowding and inadequate facilities have contributed to a rising number of inmate escapes. The makeshift escape method using bedsheets, known colloquially in prison slang as “teresa,” raises concerns over the effectiveness of the prison's security measures and the management of inmates. Local authorities are emphasizing the importance of recapturing the two remaining fugitives to ensure community safety and restore confidence in the state's penal system.

As the search continues for Nascimento and Silva, residents and local organizations are urging for improved conditions in prisons, which they argue could help reduce the likelihood of escapes in the future. The recapture of Carvalho, while a relief for the local community, shines a light on the systemic issues within the correctional system that require urgent attention to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
