Covid field hospital becomes abandoned depot for ambulances and equipment in Nova Iguaçu

An abandoned structure in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, that once served as a COVID-19 field hospital is now a dumping ground for unused ambulances and healthcare equipment.

In Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, an abandoned COVID-19 field hospital has become a repository for medical equipment and ambulances, reflecting the neglect faced by facilities built during the pandemic. The hospital, which was erected at a cost exceeding R$ 50 million, was inaugurated in 2021 with the capacity to accommodate 300 patients, but it is now largely decommissioned. Originally named after a doctor who succumbed to COVID-19 in 2020, only the front of the hospital remains operational as a modular facility for transferring patients from other units.

Residents have reported the sight of at least seven ambulances, a truck, and a trailer once used for transporting mobile CT scanners, all somewhat faded in the elements at the back of the now-defunct hospital. The abandoned area gives a stark visual of medical equipment carelessly strewn about, some of it merely covered by makeshift tents. Such imagery raises concerns about the management of public health resources and the effective use of funding allocated for pandemic responses.

This scenario exemplifies a broader issue within Brazil where many health investments made during the crisis have faced under-utilization or mismanagement in the aftermath. The disuse of these facilities, once so crucial during the height of the pandemic, calls for an urgent reevaluation of continuing healthcare strategies and reveals significant gaps in local governance regarding health infrastructure and community health dependability.
