Authorities shot down a drone from Belarus, but a suspect caught the cargo first
Lithuanian authorities intercepted a drone carrying a cargo of cigarettes from Belarus, but a suspect managed to grab the load before being caught.
Lithuanian border guards intercepted a suspected cargo drone that had flown into their territory from Belarus, with the incident taking place in the Dieveniškės Loop region, which borders Belarus. The border guards were on duty when they detected an object, likely a drone, entering Lithuania. They quickly employed anti-drone measures that led to the drone crashing down.
Upon inspecting the crash site, the border guards observed a man grabbing a bundle off the ground and fleeing towards a nearby property. Officers from the Gintaras Žagūnis border post chased the suspect and successfully apprehended him. The individual was identified as a 19-year-old resident from a nearby town.
Further investigation revealed two white packages in a well at the property, containing 1,500 packs of 'NZ Gold' cigarettes with Belarusian tax stamps. This discovery highlights ongoing smuggling attempts across the border and raises concerns about the use of drones for illegal activities, prompting discussions on enhanced border security measures in Lithuania.
