"Maxima Latvia" to acquire the company that owns a shopping center on Grostonas Street in Riga
The Latvian Competition Council has approved the acquisition of full control by SIA "Maxima Latvia" over SIA "Irbis A", allowing it to influence the retail leasing market in Riga.
The Latvian Competition Council (KP) has granted permission for the retailer SIA "Maxima Latvia" to exclusively acquire decisive influence over SIA "Irbis A". The decision came after the council found no substantial harm to competition arising from the merger. This acquisition is expected to impact the retail leasing market for shopping centers in Riga and its vicinity, along with related markets for food, consumer goods, and pharmaceuticals.
SIA "Irbis A" is primarily engaged in the management and leasing of commercial real estate, particularly retail spaces. At the time of the merger, "Irbis A" owned a shopping center located at Grostonas Street 1 in Riga, where "Maxima" operates alongside several other tenants. The merger may lead to intensified control over several retail segments which are vital for consumer access to essential services and goods.
"Maxima Latvia" is part of the Lithuanian group "Vilniaus Prekyba" and is known for operating in the non-specialized retail sector, predominantly selling food, beverages, and tobacco products. The increasing influence of "Maxima" in Riga's retail market represents significant consolidation within the industry, raising questions about potential impacts on competition and consumer choice in the area.
