The Danish Road Directorate sets a date for the opening of the new Storstrøm Bridge
The new Storstrøm Bridge, named after Queen Margrethe II, will open for traffic on March 23 after several delays.
After a series of delays, the new Storstrøm Bridge, officially named Dronning Margrethe II’s Bro, is set to open to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians on March 23. The announcement was made by the Danish Road Directorate, the project's contractor, highlighting the modern features of the bridge that are sure to enhance travel across the Storstrøm. Project manager Niels Gottlieb expressed confidence that both cyclists and motorists will benefit from the improved road conditions, pointing out the smoother asphalt and wider lanes compared to the previous bridge.
The bridge serves as a critical link between the islands of Zealand and Falster, incorporating Masnedø into the route. This infrastructure upgrade will not only facilitate smoother vehicle movement but is also expected to support future railway transport, which is anticipated to commence in 2027. This enhanced connectivity is vital for the regions, as it improves access and may stimulate local economies along the new route.
The opening will occur in phases, starting with northbound traffic from Falster to Zealand, followed by southbound traffic from Zealand to Falster later in the day. This methodical approach will ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruption for residents and travelers alike, indicating the project's successful completion amidst prior challenges.
