Seimas appointed Artūras Drigotas as a judge of the Constitutional Court

The Lithuanian Seimas has appointed Artūras Drigotas as a judge of the Constitutional Court following a unanimous vote.

The Lithuanian Seimas has appointed Artūras Drigotas as a judge of the Constitutional Court with a decisive vote of 100 in favor and 2 abstentions. This appointment followed the nomination from the Seimas Chairman Juozas Olekas, who highlighted Drigotas’s extensive experience which meets all the constitutional requirements for judges of this court. Drigotas has served as a judge at the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania since 2002 and is also a lecturer at Mykolas Romeris University.

This decision follows a previous controversy where Julius Sabatauskas, another nominee by the Seimas Chairman, was deemed ineligible for the position due to constitutional discrepancies. The Constitutional Court had ruled that Sabatauskas lacked the required ten years of legal or academic experience in the field of law. This situation brought to light the importance of stringent qualifications for judges in Lithuania and led to calls for careful scrutiny of future nominations.

Drigotas's appointment is significant as it underscores the need for robust legal expertise within the Constitutional Court, especially at a time when the institution's role in interpreting Lithuania’s laws is more critical than ever. With his background and qualifications, Drigotas is expected to contribute positively to the court's workings, reinforcing the judicial system's integrity and public trust.
