Bild: Russia may invade Estonia and repeat the 'Donetsk scenario'
Russian social media has been promoting the idea of declaring a 'People's Republic of Narva,' raising concerns that it signals a potential invasion analogous to its actions in Ukraine in 2014.
In recent weeks, Russian social media channels have been advocating the establishment of a 'People's Republic of Narva,' which is a border city in eastern Estonia with a population of approximately 50,000, 90% of whom are Russian-speaking. Estonian intelligence agencies view this campaign as a possible preparation for an invasion similar to the aggression Russia began against Ukraine in the spring of 2014. These developments are alarming as they echo past incidents of territorial claims and aggression by Russia in neighboring regions.
Since early March, there has been an increase in calls on social media to distribute leaflets, conduct sabotage, and arm themselves in support of declaring the 'People's Republic of Narva.' Propagandists are encouraging armed conflict with slogans such as 'Russians, we are not alone!' and asserting that 'Russian land stretches from Narva to Pius,' referencing regions in northeastern Estonia. Such activities reflect a strategy to mobilize local support and create a foundation for possible political and military actions, further heightening tensions in the region.
Estonian security services, represented by Kapo spokesperson Marta Tuule, have emphasized that these posts on social media are part of a disinformation campaign aimed at inciting confusion and dividing society. This tactic not only seeks to destabilize Estonia but serves Russian interests in asserting influence over former Soviet territories, raising fears among Estonians and prompting tighter security measures as the situation evolves.
