As the scooter season begins, insurers report the first injuries

A report by 'Lietuvos draudimas' highlights an uptick in injuries associated with electric scooters as their popularity rises, with nearly 200 cases recorded last year.

As the popularity of electric scooters rises in Lithuania, 'Lietuvos draudimas' has reported a significant increase in injuries related to their use, identifying electric scooters as the most frequently used micro-mobility device among both adults and children. According to a study commissioned by the insurance company, three out of four respondents indicated that they use scooters, leading to nearly 200 recorded injury cases last year. The report emphasizes that most injuries are associated with accidents, while a lesser number involve property damage, such as collisions with vehicles.

The data also reveals that the most common injuries sustained by scooter users are to the limbs and head, with specific statistics showing that in the first quarter of 2025 alone, there were 47 cases of injuries to hands and legs, along with close to 30 head and facial injuries. These figures highlight the potential dangers of using electric scooters, particularly as their usage becomes more mainstream. Experts stress the importance of safety measures and awareness among riders to mitigate the risk of accidents.

The implications of these findings are significant for public health and safety. With electric scooters becoming a prevalent mode of transportation, particularly in urban areas, there is a pressing need for regulations, safety protocols, and educational campaigns to ensure users are aware of the risks and how to prevent injuries. The increasing number of accidents calls for an urgent response from local authorities and the community to promote safe riding practices and possibly rethink the infrastructure to better accommodate such modes of transport.
