50 Years of the Ocean Engineering Department at IIT Madras: Here are the Future Courses
IIT Madras celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Department, which has become a cornerstone of India's maritime capabilities and blue economy.
Today marks a significant milestone for India as the Ocean Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras celebrates its golden jubilee, having been established in 1977. This department has evolved into a vital hub for enhancing India's maritime strength and contributing to the country's blue economy. The institution not only trains engineers but has been at the forefront of developing technologies that reduce India's dependence on foreign imports under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.
IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur are the only two institutes in the country offering specialized undergraduate programs in this domain, reflecting the unique expertise and focus on marine engineering education in India. Over the past 50 years, the Ocean Engineering Department has played a crucial role in preparing skilled professionals capable of driving innovation in India's marine infrastructure, thereby establishing a renewed identity for the sector.
Looking ahead, the department aims to focus on cutting-edge technologies such as generating electricity from ocean waves and protecting coastlines against climate change impacts. According to Professor V. Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras, future courses will incorporate elements of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and data science to equip students with the tools necessary for addressing complex challenges in the maritime field. This evolution highlights the department's commitment to fostering sustainable solutions that align with global environmental challenges and India's economic ambitions.
