Maritime Labour Convention: International event with the participation of ICS for the 20 years
An international event is being held to commemorate 20 years since the adoption of the Maritime Labour Convention by the ILO, featuring key speakers from the maritime community.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a significant international framework for the rights and working conditions of seafarers worldwide. In celebration of this milestone, a special event is taking place today at the ILO's headquarters in Geneva, attended by top representatives from the international maritime community. The panel discussion titled 'The Impact of MLC on Seafarersβ Rights: 20 Years On' includes participation from prominent figures in the industry, highlighting the ongoing relevance of the convention.
The event features presentations from Thomas Kazakos, General Secretary of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), along with Gilbert F. Houngbo, the Director-General of the ILO, Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF). They will discuss the progress made and challenges faced in protecting the rights of seafarers over the past two decades, making it a critical forum for addressing current issues in the shipping industry.
This anniversary not only serves as a reflection on the accomplishments since the MLC's implementation but also emphasizes the work that remains to ensure fair treatment and safety for seafarers globally. The participation of high-level representatives underscores the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration within the maritime sector to uphold the principles established by the convention.
