Prime Minister Takaichi: Meeting with Palantir Chairman 'Did Not Discuss Service Usage'
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi clarified that during her recent meeting with Palantir Technologies Chairman Peter Thiel, there were no discussions about utilizing the company's services.
On the 17th in the House of Councillors Budget Committee, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi responded to queries regarding her meeting with Peter Thiel, the Chairman of Palantir Technologies, stating that there was no discussion about using their services. The meeting took place on the 5th at the Prime Minister's official residence and involved a courtesy visit from Thiel and others. Palantir Technologies has been noted for its close relations with the U.S. military, and reports from the Wall Street Journal indicated that their services were used during attacks on Venezuela and Iran conducted by the Trump administration.
In the discussion, Kamiyama Munemichi, leader of a minor opposition party, expressed public concerns on social media about the potential for the Japanese government to adopt Palantir's services extensively in the future. Prime Minister Takaichi addressed this speculation by asserting that the meeting did not cover any topics related to service utilization and emphasized that the conversation centered around subjects such as small modular reactors (SMR) and advancements in science and technology.
This clarification comes at a time when the influence of foreign tech companies over governmental operations and military actions is under scrutiny, particularly given Palantir's controversial history. The Prime Minister's denial of service discussions aims to quell fears regarding increased collaboration with Palantir, while highlighting Japan's focus on developing domestic scientific capabilities and energy technologies like SMR, which are crucial for its energy policy moving forward.
