Growers predict when local strawberries will be available

Latvian growers anticipate that the first local strawberries will be ready by the end of May despite a long and cold winter.

Despite enduring a long and cold winter, Latvian strawberry growers are optimistic about this year's yield. They predict that the first local strawberries could be available by the end of May, as expressed by agronomist Guntars Dzērve from SIA 'Mad Nordic', which operates under the brand 'Augusta zemenes'. He indicated that while this year's strawberry yield is expected to be stable, much will depend on the weather conditions leading up to the harvest.

Dzērve also pointed out that many growers who struggled with winterization of their strawberry plants faced losses, particularly those who had hoped for a milder winter. However, he noted that most strawberry plantations outside have fared better through the winter, with their success largely hinging on how the spring temperatures progress. A gradual increase in warmth would ease the growing conditions for farmers and provide more predictable results.

Farmers in various regions, including Talsi, Tukums, Trikātas, Valmiera, Skulte, and Vecumnieki, have already begun planting strawberries in greenhouses, signaling the start of the growing season. The optimism surrounding the upcoming strawberry harvest not only highlights the resilience of local agriculture but also addresses the anticipation among consumers for fresh, local produce as summer approaches.
