Lee Hyun-ji qualifies for her first Asian Games in judo heavyweight category
Lee Hyun-ji won her first Asian Games qualification in judo by defeating World No. 3 Kim Ha-yoon in a national selection tournament.
Lee Hyun-ji, competing in the heavyweight division, achieved a significant milestone by securing her first qualification for the Asian Games set to take place in Nagoya, Japan, in 2026. Held at the Boryeong Comprehensive Gymnasium in South Chungcheong Province, the national selection tournament was a pivotal event where she overcame Kim Ha-yoon, the former gold medalist of the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and a bronze medalist in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. Lee showcased her skills by earning points with an effective technique just before the end of the match, securing her position in the prestigious games.
Over the years, Lee's journey in judo has been marked by both stellar achievements and significant setbacks. As a promising athlete, she caught attention after winning the IJF World Youth Judo Championships in 2024 while still in high school. However, she faced challenges in crucial competitions, particularly a stumble against Kim Ha-yoon during the World Championships in June of last year. That loss highlighted the competitive nature of their rivalry, with Lee finishing third that time while Kim claimed the title.
Despite past difficulties, Lee's recent performance shows her growth and determination. Following a notable victory over Kim at the Tokyo Grand Slam last December, she has now firmly established herself as a considerable contender by beating Kim again to earn the Asian Games spot. Additionally, And Jae-hong from Namyangju also marked his place by winning the men's 73kg category, making this his first appearance at the Asian Games as well, showcasing a new wave of talent in South Korean judo heading into the upcoming international competition.
