Kim Yoon-ji, Who Learned How to Fall, Rises Quickly and Embraces the Bluest Sky in the World

Kim Yoon-ji, a 20-year-old para-athlete, made history by winning Korea’s first gold medal in an individual event at the Winter Paralympics, showcasing her resilience after years of training and overcoming challenges.

At just 20 years old, Kim Yoon-ji, also known as 'Smiley,' made a remarkable achievement in para-nordic skiing by winning the gold medal in the women's individual sit-down biathlon during the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina. Competing in the 12.5km event, she recorded a time of 38:00.1, surpassing competitors Anja Bicker of Germany and Kendall Gretsch of the USA. This victory marks a significant milestone as she is the first South Korean female athlete to win an individual medal in the Winter Paralympics, realizing a dream that came after years of perseverance and dedication to the sport.

Kim's journey has been marked by significant challenges as she first dabbled in skiing in middle school, where she encountered many falls and frustrations, even breaking her ski poles. However, she quickly learned how to minimize injuries and get back up swiftly after falling, allowing her to channel adrenaline into her performance. This determination led her to the podium, where she celebrated her win under a brilliant blue sky, which she fondly describes as her favorite sight.

In the previous Winter Paralympics in Beijing, South Korea did not secure any medals, making Kim’s gold even more significant as it ends an eight-year drought for the country at the Winter Games. Beyond her recent accolades, Kim Yoon-ji has made a significant impact in disabled sports in South Korea, earning Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in both summer and winter events, a first in the country’s history. Her achievements inspire hope and recognition for athletes with disabilities on a global stage.
