Ethiopian runner Fottin Tsegay records the second fastest time in marathon history
Ethiopian runner Fottin Tsegay made history by winning the Barcelona Marathon with the second fastest time ever recorded in the sport.
Ethiopian runner Fottin Tsegay achieved a remarkable milestone during her debut marathon by winning the Barcelona Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 53 seconds, marking the second fastest time in marathon history. The 28-year-old Tsegay finished significantly ahead of her closest competitor, Kenyan Jepkosgei Kiplimu, who came in second about eight minutes after. The third place was taken by another Ethiopian, Zinab Yimer.
Following her victory, Tsegay expressed satisfaction with her performance, despite noting that strong winds hindered her attempt to break the world record. She had aimed to challenge the existing record set by Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich at 2:09:56 but fell short by 57 seconds. Tsegay's performance not only showcases her incredible talent but also indicates her potential to set new records in future marathons.
In the men's competition, Ugandan Abel Chilogat won first place, outpacing Kenyan Patrick Mosin and adding more excitement to an already competitive event. Tsegay's achievement is a significant moment for Ethiopian athletics, continuing a legacy of excellence in long-distance running and setting the stage for her future endeavors in the sport.
