Lassa fever: Bauchi, Ondo hardest hit, death toll now 109
Lassa fever deaths in Nigeria have increased to 109, with Bauchi and Ondo states being the hardest hit.
The latest reports indicate a concerning spike in Lassa fever deaths in Nigeria, with the toll rising from 99 to 109 in just one week. This uptick is particularly alarming as it exceeds the numbers recorded during the same time frame last year, highlighting the growing severity of the outbreak in 2026. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that at least 18 states are affected, indicating a nationwide spread of the disease.
Among those infected, health care workers are facing significant risks, with 37 reported cases in the first nine weeks of 2026, six of whom were affected in just the past week alone. This alarming rise in infections among frontline workers raises concerns about the capacity of the healthcare system to manage the outbreak. The NCDC has noted that five states, including Bauchi and Ondo, account for 86% of all confirmed cases, illustrating a concentration of the crisis in specific regions.
Additionally, the data indicates that the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has increased to 23.2%, significantly higher than the 18.7% observed in 2025. This heightened CFR suggests a need for urgent interventions and increased public health efforts to control the outbreak and prevent further transmission of the virus. The situation highlights the importance of robust health policies and effective outbreak management, particularly in the most affected regions.
