Lassa fever death toll hits 10 in Benue
The death toll from Lassa fever in Benue State, Nigeria, has increased to 10 amid a significant outbreak.
In Benue State, Nigeria, the ongoing outbreak of Lassa fever has become increasingly severe, with the death toll rising to 10, as reported by State Epidemiologist, Dr. Msuega Asema. This alarming figure was disclosed during a visit by the stateβs Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ejeh-Ogwuche, to the isolation centers where affected individuals are being treated. The outbreak has particularly affected health workers, with four confirmed deaths among that group, showcasing the severe impact on medical personnel fighting the disease.
Earlier in the month, the Commissioner had officially declared the outbreak following a surge in suspected cases of Lassa fever. The situation prompted immediate assessments of the response measures at local health facilities, with over 60 suspected cases reported to date. Dr. Asema emphasized the seriousness of the outbreak during the on-site visits, highlighting the urgent need for public health interventions and increased awareness to prevent further spread of the virus among the population.
As the outbreak continues to develop, public health officials are now faced with the challenge of containing the infection and safeguarding health workers. The ripple effects of such public health crises can lead to heightened concern in the local community and place additional strain on the healthcare system. The situation calls for ongoing efforts and resources to combat this disease effectively in the affected areas of Benue State.
