Kim Jong-in: Oh Se-hoon, it won't be easy in the main election... likely to challenge for party leadership instead of running for mayor of Seoul
Kim Jong-in predicts that Oh Se-hoon, the Mayor of Seoul, may not participate in the upcoming local election and will instead focus on running for party leadership.
Kim Jong-in, the former emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party, speculates that Oh Se-hoon, the Mayor of Seoul, is likely to pivot from running in the local election to competing for the party leadership. On the 17th, the People Power Party will announce the third public recruitment of candidates for the Seoul mayoral election. Addressing this matter on MBC Radio, Kim stated that he believes Oh, based on his temperament, is unlikely to enter the primary competition, and might rather be inclined to seek challenges in party leadership roles instead. Kim suggests that Oh's reluctance stems from facing a challenging main election and a party situation that makes participation undesirable.
Kim also revealed details of a conversation he had with Mayor Oh on the 8th, the application deadline for the first candidate selection. In that meeting, Oh reportedly expressed that there would be little point in associating himself with this candidacy in the current state. He had proposed certain conditions, including the establishment of an 'Innovation Election Campaign Committee', which the party leadership has appeared negative towards, leading him to withdraw his intention to register.
Additionally, Kim clarified that he has no interest in heading an innovation campaign committee, calling it an insignificant role that adds little value. He stressed that without substantial reform following the elections, the outlook for the 2028 general elections could be grim. Moreover, Kim forecasts that Mayor Oh might find himself in competition with other party figures like Ahn Cheol-soo and Na Kyung-won regarding the party leadership dynamics post-local elections, while assessing the chances of re-election for party leader Jang Dong-hyuk as slim, given his recent losses in elections.
