"Cut off from Yoon first" - Oh Se-hoon, does not apply for the candidacy of Seoul mayor
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon opted not to apply for the candidacy in the upcoming elections, emphasizing his disconnection from the ruling party's leadership.
On the evening of the 8th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced that he would not submit his application for the candidacy in the People Power Party's local elections scheduled for June 3. This decision comes amid ongoing tension within the party, where Oh believes it is inappropriate to participate in electoral processes given that the party's leader, Jang Dong-hyuk, has not addressed the party's direction amid criticisms of the incumbent government led by President Yoon Suk-yeol. Oh expressed concerns that a leader who pushes members into a losing battle is not suitable for leadership.
Furthermore, Mayor Oh has been vocal on social media, particularly criticizing Jang. He argues that the party needs to halt the nomination process to facilitate discussions among its members about the current challenges and to develop a cohesive strategy. Oh's team has highlighted his desire to break away from the so-called 'Yoon's faction' and focus on re-establishing a more independent party stance in the upcoming elections.
The People Power Party is expected to hold an emergency meeting of its members on the 9th to deliberate on electoral strategies and party direction. As the election approaches, competitors such as former lawmaker Yoon Hee-suk and regional party chief Lee Sang-kyu have already declared their candidacies for the mayoral race, while other prominent members appear to be stepping back from the electoral fray, indicating potential shifts in party dynamics ahead of the elections.
