DNIT declares emergency on 5 wooden bridges on BR-222 in Piauí
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure in Brazil has declared an emergency on five wooden bridges on the BR-222 highway following an incident with one of them.
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) announced on Monday that it has declared a state of emergency for five wooden bridges located on the BR-222 highway, between the towns of Piripiri and Batalha. This decision was made in response to a recent incident involving one of these structures, highlighting the necessity for immediate attention to the safety of these aged infrastructures. The bridges, which are remnants of a section of road that transitioned from state to federal status, have been deemed structurally inadequate in their current form.
DNIT has revealed that it already has finalized plans to replace these five wooden bridges with new concrete structures, with construction expected to commence later this March. This upgrade aims to enhance the safety and durability of transportation infrastructure in the region, which has faced challenges due to the maintenance issues associated with the older wooden designs. While the administrative and technical plans are underway, monitoring teams are actively ensuring the safety of vehicular traffic on the highway.
Currently, only one of the five bridges is closed to traffic, while measures are taken to assess and repair the remaining structures. The emergency declaration underscores the critical need for infrastructure improvement in Brazil, particularly in areas where older construction methods may pose risks to public safety. The situation emphasizes the importance of timely intervention to prevent potential disasters on major transportation routes.
