Unlit Parking on Night Bridge Leads to Fatal Accident, Driver Reported for Negligent Driving
A tragic accident occurred on the Megami Ohhashi Bridge in Nagasaki where a parked car without lights was involved in a collision resulting in the death of a truck driver.
On September 13 last year, a fatal accident on the Megami Ohhashi Bridge in Nagasaki resulted in the death of a truck driver when his vehicle collided with a parked car that had turned off its lights. The driver of the parked car, a 22-year-old man, was reported to the Nagasaki District Public Prosecutors Office on charges of negligent driving leading to death under the Road Traffic Act. According to the authorities, the parked vehicle had remained in a no-parking zone without lights for approximately 30 minutes prior to the incident, which contributed to the accident.
The investigation revealed that the young man was on the phone with a friend inside the vehicle when the accident occurred. His car, parked on the prohibited lane, was hit by the trailer that subsequently crashed through a guardrail and fell approximately 65 meters into the sea, confirming the death of the truck driver. Both drivers’ complicity in the accident has been acknowledged as part of the legal investigation, with the police concluding that negligence on behalf of the car's driver significantly contributed to the tragic outcome.
In light of this incident, the Nagasaki Prefectural Police are currently evaluating their monitoring procedures for traffic laws, aiming to enhance safety measures on the bridge. The Megami Ohhashi, a cable-stayed bridge at a height of 65 meters, is the sixth longest of its type in Japan and serves as a vital route over Nagasaki Port, making it essential for such incidents to be addressed to prevent future occurrences.
