"There has been a double charging" – this message takes personal information and money

Finnish users are receiving fraudulent messages claiming to be from MobilePay regarding double charges, aiming to steal personal information and funds.

In Finland, users are increasingly targeted by a phishing scam masquerading as MobilePay notifications. These deceitful emails claim that a payment has encountered a double charge and that the user needs to verify their payment method by logging into their MobilePay account via a provided link. This link leads to a phishing site designed to collect sensitive personal information such as names, identification numbers, and phone numbers.

Once a user submits their information, the scam page prompts them to choose their online banking service and eventually asks for their login credentials. The fraudulent site may even display a fake Nordea login screen, misleading users into believing there is an issue with their authentication app being offline, creating delays as the scammer takes control of the victim's bank account. This method reflects the scammer's preparation and research, as they accurately reference MobilePay's actual street address in Helsinki, adding credibility to their deception.

It is important to note that MobilePay accounts are managed through their mobile app and not via a web portal, which users should be reminded of to help protect against such scams. The incident underscores the growing threat of online fraud and the importance of users remaining vigilant about where they enter their personal information, especially in the case of unexpected emails regarding financial transactions.
