This scam is now haunting Finland: "An unusually high number reported in a short time"

Scam messages impersonating legitimate Finnish institutions are flooding the public, prompting warnings about fraudulent attempts to steal personal data.

Finnish citizens are currently inundated with scam messages that exploit the names of official institutions such as Suomi.fi, the Finnish Tax Administration, Kela (the Finnish social insurance institution), and S-Pankki. Reports have surged through the Telemarketing Association of Finland's Kilpi app, indicating an alarming increase in impersonation scams particularly referencing S-Pankki. These messages often request users to log into a link that redirects them to a counterfeit website, where their personal information may be harvested.

One of the most prevalent types of scams involves messages appearing to come from Suomi.fi, including official-sounding phrases and using names of trusted institutions like the Tax Administration. The messages generally claim that a 'new official message is pending', creating a sense of urgency that may compel recipients to click on malicious links. The threat is substantial; entering banking credentials on a fraudulent site can enable scammers to create mobile verification or even take out loans in the victim's name, exposing them to identity theft.

The Telemarketing Association of Finland has stressed the importance of public awareness regarding these scams, urging people to remain vigilant and skeptical of unsolicited messages. As these impersonation attempts continue to proliferate, the need for increased cybersecurity measures and better public education on recognizing phishing attempts is becoming crucial for safeguarding personal information and financial security in Finland.
