The World Rally Championship expands to Scotland

The World Rally Championship will return to the United Kingdom with an event in Scotland next year, marking its first appearance there since 2019.

The World Rally Championship (WRC) is set to return to the United Kingdom next year, with a stage being held on the roads of Scotland. Organizers have announced a three-year agreement for the event, which will see top rally drivers compete on the gravel roads of Aberdeen County. This return to British soil is noteworthy as it has been since 2019 that the WRC held an event in the UK, though prior to this, events were predominantly held in Wales.

The last time Scotland hosted competitive rally events was during the 1995 RAC Rally, and this will be the first instance of a World Championship rally being held in Scotland. While the specific dates for the Scotland rally have yet to be determined, it is anticipated to take place sometime in the fall. David Richards, the British motorsport chief, expressed gratitude to the Scottish Government, Aberdeen City Council, and the Aberdeen County Council for their commitment to this event, emphasizing that their support is integral to bringing the WRC back to the UK.

The event is expected to significantly boost tourism and interest in motorsport within Scotland, showcasing the country’s scenic landscapes and hospitality to a global audience. With the announcement of the return of WRC, local authorities are likely to prepare for an influx of visitors, which could have positive economic implications for the region and further solidify Scotland’s position as a key location for international motorsport events.
