Polytechnic workers urge Abiodun to save MAPOLY from bankruptcy

Workers at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic are appealing to Governor Dapo Abiodun for urgent financial support to prevent the institution from going bankrupt due to chronic underfunding.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta has made a distress call to Governor Dapo Abiodun, urging him to provide special intervention funds to alleviate the school's financial troubles. They highlighted that the polytechnic has long played a vital role in training middle-level manpower and fostering technological and socio-economic development at both state and national levels. However, the institution is currently facing severe funding challenges.

SSANIP's leaders, Tunde Abiodun and Olutosin Ogundeyi, pointed out that MAPOLY's monthly salary obligations stand at ₦210 million, yet the institution receives a mere ₦20.75 million per month in subventions from the government. This financial disparity has persisted for over a decade, forcing the management to make difficult decisions, including possibly relying on increases in student fees or other unpopular measures. The workers fear that continued financial neglect may lead to a collapse of critical educational services.

The call for intervention comes at a time when many public institutions in Nigeria are grappling with insufficient funding and resources. The situation at MAPOLY underscores a broader pattern of educational institutions facing financial instability, which threatens their ability to function effectively and fulfill their educational mandates. This plea for governmental assistance highlights the urgent need for a reevaluation of the funding priorities of the state government to avoid further jeopardizing the educational landscape in Ogun State and beyond.
